1.    Tone changes

Liǎnɡ ɡè dì sān shēnɡ lián zài yì qǐ shí ,  qián yí ɡè dú chénɡ dì èr shēnɡ.

           一起 ,    第二 声。

When a 3rd tone is followed by another 3rd tone, it is pronounced as a 2nd tone.

eg: nǐ hǎo ní hǎo

Dì sān shēnɡ zài yī,  èr,  sì shēnɡ hé dà bùfèn qīnɡshēnɡ zì qián yào dú bàn sān

    一、二、四    部分           

shēnɡ,  jiùshì zhǐ dú yuánlái dì sān shēnɡ de qián bàn jiànɡ diào.

           

  When a 3rd tone is followed by a 1st, 2nd, 4th tone or a neutral tone, it is pronounced as a half 3rd tone, only its first half(falling) is pronounced.

“ Bù ”dān yònɡ huò zài dì yī,  èr,  sān shēnɡ qián shēnɡdiào bú biàn ,  zài dì

“不”单       第一、二、            

sì shēnɡ qián dú dì èr shēnɡ.

   第二  声。

The tone of “bù” does not change when it stands by itself or precedes a 1st, 2nd or a 3rd tone, but it is pronounced as a 2nd tone when it precedes a 4th tone.

  eg: bù kuān   bù lái   bù hǎo    bú lèi

2. 规则 Spelling rules

Yùnmǔ                             zì chénɡ yīnjié shí,    xiě chénɡ

ua, uo, uai, uei, uan, uang, ueng    音节 时,“u”  “w”

When “ua, uo, uai, uei, uan, uen, uang” and “ueng” stands alone as a syllable, “u” is written as “w”.  

Yùnmǔ qián yǒu shēnɡmǔ shí, xiě chénɡ           de shēnɡdiào biāo zài   shànɡ.

      ,  成“ui, un, “ui”       i 上。

When preceded by an initial, the finals “uei” and “uen” must be written as “ui” and “un”. The tone-mark of “ui” should be placed above “i”.
